Russia has doubled its exports of palladium to Japan

Moscow, May 28, 2026. Russia has demonstrated an impressive increase in its palladium supply to the Japanese market, doubling its exports in April 2026 compared to the same period last year. This significant jump, reaching a value of $55 million, highlights the growing trade ties between the two countries and Russia's strategic importance as a supplier of this valuable precious metal.

 April Trends and Annual Review:

According to the latest data, April 2026 saw a record-breaking increase in Russian palladium exports to Japan. The doubling of exports to $55 million indicates a significant increase in the volume or value of shipments. This positive trend is not a one-time occurrence. An analysis of the first four months of this year (January-April) reveals that the total volume of palladium exports to Japan from Russia has also doubled compared to the same period in 2025, reaching an impressive $274.9 million.

Russia is the second-largest supplier of palladium to Japan:

In April 2026, Russia confidently took the second place among the suppliers of palladium to the Japanese market. Its share was a significant 37%. This is an important indicator reflecting the growing trust of Japanese consumers in Russian metal. South Africa still holds the lead, providing 58% of Japan's import needs for palladium. However, given the growth rate of Russian supplies, this balance may change in the future.

Why is palladium so important?

Palladium is a rare and expensive precious metal that is widely used in various industries. Its unique properties make it an indispensable component:

Automotive industry: Palladium is primarily used in automobile catalytic converters. It helps to reduce harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxides.
Electronics: Palladium is used in the production of capacitors, resistors, and other electronic components.
Jewelry: Due to its resistance to tarnishing and its noble appearance, palladium is popular in jewelry.
Dentistry: It is used in dental prosthetics and crowns.
Chemical Industry: It is used as a catalyst in various chemical processes.
Strategic Importance for Russia and Japan:

The increase in Russian palladium exports to Japan is of strategic importance for both countries. For Russia, it presents new opportunities to increase its export revenue and strengthen its position in the global precious metal market. For Japan, a major consumer of palladium, diversifying its suppliers and increasing the share of Russian metal could help stabilize prices and ensure a steady supply, which is critical for its high-tech industries.

 Prospects:

Given the current trends, we can expect further growth in Russian palladium exports to Japan. Increased production, optimized logistics, and strengthened trade relations could help Russia continue to expand its presence in this important market, potentially challenging South Africa's leadership in the future.
