Asian markets and US futures rose on the back of peace talks with Iran

May 26, 2026. Tuesday was marked by a notable increase in global financial markets, inspired by news of progress in the peace negotiations between the United States and Iran. Investors were optimistic about President Donald Trump's statement about the "good" development of the dialogue with Tehran, which contributed to the strengthening of stock indices in Asia and was reflected in the positive dynamics of American futures.

The South Korean Kospi stock index showed impressive growth, reaching a new high of 8,094.90 points. This success was directly linked to the overall positive sentiment among investors, which spread across Asian markets after the weekend.

American futures also reacted positively to the news. Contracts for the S&P 500 index rose by 0.78%, the Nasdaq-100 index rose by 1.14%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.73%. This indicates that expectations for the opening of the trading session in the United States were extremely positive.

However, despite the optimistic statements, the energy market showed mixed performance. July futures for U.S. WTI oil fell by 5.37%, dropping to $91.41 per barrel. This may be due to concerns about a potential increase in oil supplies from Iran, which could potentially increase supply in the market. Meanwhile, the benchmark Brent crude oil rose by 1.75%, reaching $97.82 per barrel. This difference in performance may reflect various regional factors and speculative sentiments.

It is important to note that despite the ongoing dialogue, the situation remains fragile. The U.S. Central Command has reported preemptive strikes on Iranian missile installations, highlighting the ongoing tensions and the need for a cautious approach to assessing long-term prospects.

At the same time, former CIA Director David Petraeus has expressed the opinion that Iran is beginning to make concessions in the context of the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. This could indicate that diplomatic pressure is bearing fruit.

The Asian markets showed a mixed performance. While the Kospi continued to record highs, the Japanese Nikkei 225 index fell by 0.18%. This is a common reaction to profit-taking by investors after significant gains, as the Nikkei reached 65,000 points for the first time in its history.

It's worth noting that the major U.S. stock markets were closed on Memorial Day, which may explain the stronger reaction to today's news.

Futures, as indicators of future dynamics, have shown that today's markets are likely to be marked by positive sentiment, supported by hopes for a peaceful resolution of tensions with Iran, albeit with reservations about the fragility of the progress achieved.
